This CD-ROM contains a first treatise on all 119 species of bat currently known from the Indian Subcontinent, published by ETI and the Harrison Institute (UK). The geographical scope includes India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and the Maldives. Extralimital localities from Afghanistan, northern Myanmar and Tibet are also mapped. With over a thousand illustrations, drawings and video, the CD-ROM seeks to give a detailed understanding of the morphology, variability, geographical distribution, biology, ecology and conservation status of each of the species. Three different illustrated computer aided keys facilitate the identification of the species. Fully updated distributions maps are stored in an interactive geographic information system included in this software. All text is hyperlinked: an illustrated glossary defines specific scientific terms. All principle literature references for this group are included in this program. The bibliography includes over 600 references from journals and books published throughout the world. A gazetteer is added (with illustrations) to specify almost 1400 localities mentioned in the text. With 8 families and 37 genera, the Indian Subcontinent includes species that are not only endemic to the region but also to those that are familiar to bat workers throughout the Old World. This CD-ROM makes an excellent introduction to the Indian Bats and belongs in any modern scientific library.
