DNA technologies have a steadily increasing impact on many aspects of our live. Applications in the medical field are most prominent: prenatal and neonatal screening, diagnostics of hereditary disorders, patient specific treatment of diseases and hopefully in the near future the possibility to cure diseases caused by non-functional genes or cells. Large scale production of life saving proteins is an equally important benefit of genetic engineering. Crops can be protected against pets by predator specific treatments. And last but not least DNA analyses have proved to be a valuable tool in forensic investigations. This module explains the essentials of DNA techniques and their applications. Knowledge is a must for understanding the power of molecular biology, and helps forming a well-funded opinion on developments that are changing our society. The techniques and examples addressed in the module are supported by report and assignment forms. It is highly recommended that students use them while working on the -virtual- experiments. Reports help them to structure essential steps and note results of the experiments. Assignments are meant to reflect on the significance of the experiments and their applications.
